How to Resolve Activation Issues

On this page we give advice about the most common activation issues faced by new users on Viber.

Phone number not accepted

  • Make sure you have a carrier-based phone number. Viber does not work on VOIP phone numbers.
  • Check you have put your phone number correctly:
    • Do you have the right number of digits?
    • Have you taken out the first zero (0)?

No code

  • Have a friend call you or send you an SMS to check that your phone is working
  • Try switching between Wi-Fi and 3G or 4G
  • If you have been trying to activate by call, try getting a message instead
  • If you have been trying to receive an activation message, try getting a call instead
  • Are you abroad? Read more about what to do 

Incorrect code

  • Double check you have typed the right number in
  • If you've tried activating 3 times, wait 24 hours and try again
  • Try activating by call instead

No more code attempts left

You can only make three requests for an access code. If you need more tries, wait 24 hours and request another code.

Please note that you can only receive an activation call once in 24 hours.

Automatic callback

Automatic callback is another way to get your verification code through a call from our automated system. You can only use this method once in 24 hours.

  1. Tap Activate via call
  2. You are redirected to a web-page
  3. Check your number is correct and tap Get code
  4. Answer the call, and write down the code
  5. Enter the code in the registration screen

Activating Viber from abroad

You will need to turn roaming on (temporarily) to receive the activation SMS or call.

On Android:
  1. Open your Android settings and tap More networks
  2. Select Mobile networks and Enable data roaming
On iPhone:
  1. Open your Phone settings tap on Cellular
  2. Make sure that roaming is set to on for both data and voice calls


Once you have set up roaming, follow the regular activation process.

Viber for desktop isn't connecting to my phone

Make sure that you have Viber version 6.0 newer on your phone.

Update your Viber version to have full access to all of Viber's latest features. Just some of the features that have been added since version 6.0 was released include:

  • Instant video messages
  • Public Accounts
  • Sticker search
  • Chat Extensions
  • And so much more!

QR code to sync phone to desktop isn't working

Try these alternatives:
  • Use your selfie camerato scan the QR code
  • Use a different QR code scanner to scan the code
  • Request your secret identification key

Request your secret identification key
  1. Tap on My camera is not working, what can I do? at the bottom of the screen
  2. Click Copy to copy your secret identification key
  3. Send this code to your phone by email or message
4.  Open the message on your phone
5.  Tap on the link and choose Open to open the link on Viber
6.  Select Approve and then Yes
7.  Your device is now activated
